Or maybe Dad was like me, disappointed by the way the world turned out to be. You do the best you can, it is not enough.

Like many in his generation, he was convinced that if you explain what is right to a person, it is what that person will do. But life does not turn out like that.

The retail cooperatives were losing ground every day compared to the new giant retailers. They were, at least in Belgium, slowed down by their wholesale buyers who did not want to present anything new to the customers and by the fact that they tended to hire their closest ideological friends instead of the most competent candidates.

The Unions who had been the glory of the past century, obtaining security and health rules for the miners as well as limiting the work of children had now to justify why they were there, and they were running amok.

It was particularly true of the Communist Unions who had a double allegiance. On one hand, they wanted to better the fate of the workers but on the other, they thought that if the economy collapsed, they would have a chance to change the regime. It would be easy to demonstrate this hidden aim in France, where the very Stalinist Unions managed to kill the whole maritime industry.

Something was rotten.
